Hakeem was born in Crown Heights, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science at State University of New York at Binghamton. He also earned a master's degree in public policy from Georgetown University and a law degree from New York University Law School. He is a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

Hakeem previously worked as a law clerk for Judge Harold Baer Jr. and as an attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. He previously worked as a corporate litigator for Viacom and CBS.

Hakeem S. Jeffries is a US representative in Congressional District 8. He was first elected in 2012 and is serving his 6th term. He is the US House Minority Leader. He previously served as an assemblyman for New York State Assembly District 57 from 2007 to 2012.
