After her military service, she attended Harvard Business School and Kennedy School of Government, earning a master's degree from both institutions. She made her home in North Carolina, specifically after being stationed at Fort Bragg, now Fort Liberty.

Shelane Etchison is a former U.S. Army Special Operations Soldier with 11 years of service, including deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. She has worked as a security consultant and has been involved in economic development projects abroad.
