Michael was born in Palermo, Sicily, and raised in Chicago. He attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and holds a degree in psychology and business administration from Queens University of Charlotte. He is Catholic. 

Michael owns Lazzara Pizza restaurant and co-owns Vital Signs, a graphics company. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years.
