Mark earned a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University and graduated from Wake Forest University's Physician Assistant Program. Mark and his wife have two children and seven grandchildren.

Mark previously worked as a physician assistant at Family Care Center in Taylorsville, but retired in 2021. He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
