Kate is from Chapel Hill and attended North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She has a bachelors degree in biology and Spanish and a masters degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She and her husband Dan have two children and live in Davidson. She is the president of the Parent Teacher Organization at Davidson K-8, the block captain of the Davidson Housing Coalition, and a board member on the Davidson Town Planning Board.

Kate is a senior behavioral scientist at the University of Michigan Center for Academic Innovation. Previously, she owned and operated Pip & Grow, was an independent behavioral scientist consultant, and a behavioral scientist for the University of Michigan Center for Health Communications Research.
