Barbara is originally from Hudson, and currently lives in Oak Hill. She graduated from Pfeiffer College, and earned a master's degree from Appalachian State University. She volunteers at her local food pantry, serves on the Caldwell County Arts Council, and holds various positions at her church.

Barbara has worked as a reporter for the Hickory Daily Record and as a school librarian in multiple counties for 34 years.
