Jim was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, but grew up in Florida. He studied philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has 3 adult daughters, 3 grandchildren, and is married to Lucy. He volunteers on the Burnsville-Yancey Chamber of Commerce. 

Jim is retired, but was an agent for the North Carolina Farm Bureau for 40 years.
