Jefferson holds an associate's degree in building construction technology from Wilkes Community College. He lives in Hays, with his wife and daughter.

Jefferson owns several local retail stores. He also owns a construction business, Hill & Hill Construction, where he previously worked as a residential and commercial general contractor. He additionally worked as an associate engineering technician for the city of Winston-Salem utilities cross connections division and as a manager for J.C. Faw at Fast Track Inc. 

Jefferson J. Hill's campaign for Wilkes County Commissioner is his first run for public office. He previously served as an executive board member and president of the Humane Society of Wilkes.
