Lavenia was born and raised in Yancey County. She graduated from Mountain Heritage High School and has a bachelor's degree in education from Mars Hill College. Lavenia and her husband Kimmy Burnette have 3 adult children. 

Lavenia is currently retired. Prior, she taught for about 30 years in the Yancey County School System. After retirement, she continued to teach part time at Genesis Academy in Yancey County for 4 years.  

Lavenia Burnette's campaign for Yancey County's Board of Education is her run for public office.

Lavenia Peterson Burnette

Lavenia was born and raised in Yancey County. She graduated from Mountain Heritage High School and has a bachelors degree in education from Mars Hill College. Lavenia and her husband Kimmy Burnette have three adult children. 

Lavenia is retired after 30.5 years of teaching in the Yancey County School System.  After retirement, she continued to teach part time at Genesis Academy in Yancey County for four years.  

Lavenia Burnette's campaign for Board of Education member in Yancey County is her first entrance into politics.

- The Board of Education runs the public school system. They create policies that establish standards, accountability and evaluation of essential operations of the school system.
- The Board of Education member hires a superintendent and can remove them when necessary. The superintendent assists the Board of Education in implementing the board’s policies. 
- The Board of Education is charged with deciding the school budget. This means they decide how to allocate money between different services, such as teacher pay, repairing school facilities, or access to technology.
- Board of Education members are elected every four years.
