Avery earned his bachelor's degree in marketing and public relations from Appalachian State University. He volunteers as a youth coach in baseball, soccer, and basketball. He lives in Burlington with his wife, Becky, and their 2 children. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington.

Avery currently works as vice president of wholesale marketing with Cary Oil Company.
