Jim has a Bachelor of Arts and a law degree from the University of Montana. He lives with his wife, Barbara in Helena. They have two daughters together. Jim was raised in Chester, Montana, and graduated from Helena High School. 

Jim is a lawyer and was previously an adjunct professor at the University of Montana. He is a retired lieutenant colonel from the Montana Army National Guard.
