Troy is currently a partner at WildRye Distilling, which distributes products using Montana-grown corn and grain. He is also the chief executive officer at AC Self Storage Solutions, and the co-owner and advisor of DeFeet International. He was previously the manager at SAGE Insurance Servicing, technician at Yahoo!, Inc., an author at Waterside Productions, and the founder of WebCal, Inc. He served in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard.

Troy Downing is currently  the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, State Auditor. He assumed office on January 4, 2021 and is serving his first term. He previoulst ran for U.S. Senate Montana in 2018 but did not win.
