Dave is married to his wife, and together they have three children. He has served on the Montana High School Athletic Association, the Montana School Board Association, and the Whitefish School Board.

Dave owns and operates a chimney maintenance and supply company, Whitefish Chimney Solutions.

Dave Fern has been a member of the Montana House of Representatives, representing District 5, since 2017.
