Kim earned her bachelor's degree in economics from The George Washington University and a master's degree in regional planning and development from Cornell University. 

Kim has experience as the Director of Sanford Health, a health care nonprofit. She additionally has been a self-employed consultant, Vice President of State and Federal Relations at South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations, Region VIII Director of the US Department of Health and Human Services, and Workforce and Professional Development Project Director at Montana State University. 

Kim Gillan ran for State Senator in the State of Montana Legislature in 2004 and won. She served in this position as Minority Whip for two terms. Kim also ran for State Representative in the Montana State House of Representatives in 1996 and won. She served in this poistion as Minority Leader for two terms.

- Your State Representative participates in the legislative process at the state level. They are one of 100 members of the Montana House of Representatives. The Montana House of Representatives is the lower house of the Montana State Legislature (the state's lawmaking body).
