Judge Tim Lam seeks re-election

Tim is married and has four adult children. He received an associate's degree in business administration and a bachelor's degree in economics and finance from Kennesaw College as well as a law degree from John Marshall Law School.

Tim previously worked as an attorney. He ran a private practice and was also Solicitor of Jasper County Probate Court. Before pursuing law, Tim worked in the Atlanta Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Tim Lam is currently Chief Magistrate for Jasper County. He was elected in 2016 and has served two terms. 

Received Juris Doctor (law degree) from John Marshall Law School and passed the Georgia bar exam in 1989.   

As an attorney, Tim ran a private practice and handled both criminal and civil cases.

As Solicitor of the Probate Court, Tim prosecuted cases for the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Georgia State Patrol.

As Chief Magistrate, Tim handles the issuance of warrants, preliminary criminal trial hearings, and certain civil disputes.

Tim Lam

- Magistrate Courts hear civil cases only in amounts less than $15,000. There are no jury trials in Magistrate Court. 
- Magistrate Courts hear landlord tenant dispossessory cases (i.e. a case where a landlord is seeking an eviction of their tenant) and can order evictions. 
- The Chief Magistrate can determine procedures for managing the cases in front of the Magistrate. For example, in Fulton County the Chief Magistrate informs parties in landlord tenant dispossessory cases on the benefits of mediation and provides on-site mediators to resolve landlord tenant disputes before the parties appear in front of the judge. 
- Magistrate Courts only have jurisdiction over their respective counties. Each county has its own magistrate court. Magistrate Court Judge term lengths vary per county, however most serve four year terms. Local Superior Court Judges set parameters for Magistrate Courts.
