Trellis Law: Judge T. Christopher Hughes

Chris Hughes earned his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Georgia and his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. 

Prior to his election to judge, Chris was the first judge of the Cordele Judicial Circuit Juvenile Court, which he was named as in 2000. Prior to his time as a judge, he worked in private practice in Fitzgerald, Georgia for 16 years. 

Chris Hughes is has been a Superior Court judge for the 8th district since 2008.

As Superior Court judge, presides over civil and criminal court cases, ensuring that all proceedings are conducted fairly and in accordance with the law, as well as interpreting and applying statutes, regulations, and precedents to make rulings and issue judgments in disputes and legal matters.

As first judge of the Cordele Judicial Circuit, adjudicated cases involving minors, focusing on issues such as delinquency, custody, and child welfare.

During time in private practice, represented clients in legal matters, provided legal advice, and prepared and reviewed legal documents across various areas of law.

- Georgia Superior Court Judges hear a wide range of criminal cases from petty theft and public drunkenness to murder. Some cases in front of the Georgia Superior Court involve the death penalty. 
- On the civil side, Superior Court Judges hear cases on divorce, titles to land, contract disputes, and premises liability. 
- Superior Court Judges are elected by judicial circuit. Each county surrounding Atlanta has its own judicial circuit, while rural judicial districts typically consist of multiple counties.
- Superior Court Judges are elected to four year terms. Elections are nonpartisan. The Governor can appoint Superior Court Judges when vacancies arise.
