He has a bachelor's degree in English from Emory University, a masters in public administration from Cornell University, and a law degree from Southern Methodist University. He has a master’s in military operational art and science from Air University. He lives in Lookout Mountain with his wife Kate and their two children.

Clayton is the founder of Atticus Impact Investing, a strategic investment firm. He served in the Air Force.  He was previously the assistant district attorney for Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit and a White House Fellow during the Trump Administration. He received the Secretary of Defense’s Award for Outstanding Achievement for his work in counterterrorism during this position.
