Charles grew up in Lincolnton. He has received numerous awards, including two Lifesaving awards and a Sheriff's Commendation award. He holds multiple certifications, including Advanced, FTO, Supervision, and General Instructor certifications, and has over 4,500 hours of Georgia POST training. Charles attended the Lincoln College of Technology Nashville.

Charles currently works for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. His law enforcement career began in 1993 as a jailer before he transitioned to the Uniformed Patrol Division in 1994. He has previously served as a K-9 handler, Honor Guard member, SWAT team member, and Dive team member.

Clay Smith has a Criminal Justice degree from Georgia Military College. He grew up in Blythe, Georgia. He and his wife Luci have two daughters.

Clay was captain over the Administrative Services Division in the Columbia County police department and is a former Major a detention center. He was a member of Columbia County's Special Responce Team. He also has experience as an undercover narcotics investigator, a K9 handler, and a DARE instructor in the Columbia County School System.

The County Sheriff is an elected official who acts as the chief law enforcement officer in their county. They are tasked with operating the county jails, keeping courtrooms secure during trials, and keeping the public safe through proper law enforcement. Each Sheriff's Office in Georgia may look a little different in how they hire and run their teams, but all County Sheriffs have the same duties. These duties include the following:

- Operating the county jail
- Providing court security
- Serving civil papers
- Executing arrest warrants
- Providing primary law enforcement within unincorporated areas of the county
- Working with city law enforcement officers to keep municipalities safe

The County Sheriff and their office are unique to other law enforcement agencies in that it has to answer to the people it serves. Historically, a turnover in the Sheriff’s office will likely result in noticeable change within the office, so voting for this office is a very effective way to vote approval or disapproval for how county law enforcement is conducted.
