Mary grew up in both North Carolina and Georgia, graduating from Athens Technical College with diplomas and certificates in paralegal studies. She is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 

Mary is a certified nursing assistant who has worked for Athens Doctors and at the former Georgia Retardation Center.
