David graduated Middle Georgia State University with an Associate in Science degree in 1975. He is married with two sons and two grandchildren.

David is the Founding Director of Walton Bank & Trust and the Founding Director of Liberty First Bank. He worked on his family's farm, Thompson Family Farms, and was also a real estate builder, developer, and investor.

David is the County Commission Chair in Walton County. He was elected in 2021 and has served one term in this position. He was appointed by the Walton County Board of Commissioners to serve on the Walton Country Hospital Board Authority from 1982 to 1987.
