She earned her bachelor's degree in social science with a minor in anthropological linguistics and her master's degree in adult education from Northern Arizona University. She and her husand have two children and they are members of Dove of the Desert United Methodist Church.

Barbara currently works as a part-time English teacher at Glendale Community College. She previously worked as a middle and high school teacher.
