Thomas has lived in Chesterfield for 23 years. He has a bachelor's degree in theology and political science and a law degree from George Mason University. He attends the Church of the Epiphany Catholic Church.

Thomas is a lawyer. He has a private practice, McKenna Law, PLC. He used to be deputy commonwealth's attorney in Chesterfield County, a prosecutor in Lynchburg's Attorney General's Office, and a senior state trooper for the Virginia state police.
