Hermie is from Emporia. He has a bachelor's degree in industrial relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives with his wife, Angie, and three children.

Hermie owns Sadler Brothers Oil Company, which manages truck stops and convenience stores. He also owns FOSHO Bar and Grille, Victory Lane Restaurant, and a Quiznos with his wife. He cohosts the podcast Leaning Right and Turning Left with state senator Bill Stanley. He used to be a NASCAR driver and a pit reporter for Fox NASCAR.
