Makya is from Fort Huachuca, Arizona. She has lived in Virginia for 27 years. She has a bachelor's degree in graphic design from Florida A&M University and a master's degree in graphic design from George Mason University. She lives with her three children in Northern Virginia.

Makya owns communication and design company Mareta Creations. She used to be a group chief for the Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) diversity and inclusion office, and she used to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
