Nhan is originally from Vietnam. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School. He has a bachelor's degree in engineering from Virginia Tech. He is a single parent of three children.

Nhan used to be an IT consultant for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Karrie owns and operates a small consulting firm. She used to be the communications director for Shared Hope International, board president of her county's sexual assault crisis organization, and worked at a group home for foster children.
