Karen is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. She has a bachelor's degree from Tulane University and a law degree from Washington University. She lives with her husband in Oakton.

Karen is a guardian ad litem and a lawyer. She used to work for nonprofit organizations practicing employment and labor law.

Karen Keys-Gamarra is currently a school board member for Fairfax County. She was first elected in 2017 and has been in office for two terms.
