Dan has lived in Alpharetta for more than 20 years. He lives with his wife, Colleen, in the Hampton Hall community. They have two children.

Dan is an insurance agent. He used to be the chair of the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation and the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce.

Daniel Merkel is currently the city council member representing post 6. He was first elected in 2015 and has been in office for two terms.
