Gary was born in Atlanta in 1958. He attended the University of Georgia. Gary and his wife Lydia, a former teacher live on their family farm in Commerce, Georgia and are members of Maysville Baptist Church. They have two older children.

Gary is the Agriculture Commissioner of Georgia. He also currently serves on advisory committees for the United States Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency and the Export Import Bank of the United States. Previously, Gary worked at the Georgia Farm Bureau and co-managed the Georgia Food Industry Partnership for 13 years. He also served as president of the Georgia Agribusiness Council for 21 years.
