Charles is from Nashville, Tennessee. He has a bachelors degree from Vanderbilt University, and attended Duke University for Medical School. He received a masters degree in public health from the University of North Carolina and completed his three year residency in family practice at East Tennessee University.

Charles is a retired physician. He was a doctor in hospitals in North Carolina, Arizona, and Georgia. In 2007, he was commissioned as a Lt. Col in the US Air Force, and served as a surgeon in the US Air Force.
