Currey is from Tunnel Hill. She attended school in Whitfield County. She has a bachelors degree from Agnes Scott College. She also holds a teaching certification. She has a masters in education from the University of Georgia and a law degree from the Emory School of Law.

Currey is an Attorney at Hitchens Law.  She previously worked as an attorney with the Georgia Legal Services Program at the Dalton Office, the Piedmont Office of the Georgia Legal Services, and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. She also previously worked as a 4th grade teacher in the Decatur city schools.

Currey Hitchen's campaign for State School Superintendent is her first entry to politics.

As a citizen, she supported a letter to the Georgia Department of Education with several organizations on equitably re-opening schools during the pandemic.

- The State School Superintendent is the Administrative Head of the Georgia Department of Education. They are responsible for putting into action the policies and regulations that come out of the State Board of Education for Georgia’s K-12 public education system. 
- The State School Superintendent provides guidance to the State Board of Education and local school boards on how to comply with new state education laws, such as changes in funding or new curriculum requirements.
- The State School Superintendent can make recommendations to the State Board of Education, a board of 13 members who are all appointed by the Governor and set policies for the public school system.
- The State School Superintendent is elected statewide. They serve four year terms.
