Burt is from Jackson, Georgia. He attended Woodward Academy. He has a history degree from The University of Georgia. Burt lives with his wife, Jan, and their two children, Stella and Banks, in Butts County. They attend Rock Springs Church in Milner.

He works with his family businesses: Jones Petroleum, a gas company, and JP Capital & Insurance, a retail insurance company.

Burt Jones is currently a Georgia State Senator representing the 25th District. He was elected in 2012 and has served five terms. Until 2021, he was chairman of the Senate Insurance and Labor Committee.
