Burt is originally from Jackson, Georgia. He attended Woodward Academy. He has a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Georgia. He lives with his wife, Jan, and their two children, Stella and Banks, in Butts County. They attend Rock Springs Church in Milner.

Burt works for Jones Petroleum, a gas company, and JP Capital & Insurance, a retail insurance company.

Burt Jones is currently the state senator representing district 25. He was first elected in 2012 and has been in office for five terms. Until 2021, he was chair of the senate insurance and labor committee.
