Imani grew up in DeKalb County and graduated from Druid Hills High School. She has a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from South Carolina State University and a master's degree in public health. She is currently working on her PhD in public health with a focus on community minority health at Emory University. She has lived in Tucker for four years. She is a single mother to a 10 year old boy.

Professional background

Imani is a biomedical research specialist in the Division of Animal Resources at Emory School of Medicine. She owns a business, I Can Become Anything LLC, to provide young people with resources to become confident and successful.

Political background

Imani Barnes' campaign for city council is her first entry into politics.

Running for city council because she realized that Black, immigrant and LGBTQ communities lack representation in city government.

Supports a LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance for the city.

Said it is "imperative" that the council becomes more diverse. If she wins, she would be the first Black and first LGBTQ member of Tucker City Council.
