Making Housing More Affordable and Fighting Gentrification

With housing costs on the rise, I am firmly committed to addressing the negative impact gentrification has on local property taxes and affordable housing. This issue has always been a legislative priority of mine and I won’t stop working until we find a solution that keeps families in their homes and reduces housing costs.

Working families in our community need more help from Texas to find and buy fresh, healthy foods - that’s why I was proud that H.B. 1203, my bill to create the Office of Food System Security and Resiliency within the Texas Department of Agriculture, passed out of the Texas House in April, but ultimately died in the Senate. I’m running for re-election to pass this important legislation so that urban and rural communities have the tools and support to end systemic food insecurity in Texas.

Criminal Justice Reform

Texas House Democrats must lead in the fight to end the school to prison pipeline, improve training and recruitment of law enforcement, and increase police accountability so we reduce violence in communities across Texas.

Child Welfare and Foster Care Reform

Texas House Democrats believe like I do, that we must protect our children by increasing funding for severely underfunded government agencies such as the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. We must reform this agency, along with Child Protective Services and the Health and Human Services Commission to ensure the safety and well-being of every child under the custody and care of the State of Texas or foster homes.

Criminal Justice Reform
During the 87th Legislative Session, our office filed House Bill 372, a bill that would have ensured indigent defendants with a habeas corpus claim have access to an attorney to represent them and investigate their claim. Our office was proud to pass this bill through the Texas House.

Our office also filed House Bill 3248, which would have decriminalized cannabis in Texas and allowed local governments to legalize the retail sale of cannabis. A new tax would be imposed on these cannabis sales to help fund our public schools and decrease our reliance on property taxes in Texas.

EXPANDING ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE
Over 5.2 million Texans do not have access to health insurance, making Texas the most uninsured state. Our offi ce was proud to support numerous bills this session to help make healthcare more accessible for all Texans. Our offi ce co-authored House Bill 12, which will expand Medicaid coverage for women following pregnancy for 12 months, ensuring essential postpartum care.

Our offi ce co-authored House Bill 12, which will expand Medicaid coverage for women following pregnancy for 12 months, ensuring essential postpartum care. We co-authored House Bill 916, which will allow women to get a 12-month supply of contraceptive drugs, helping expand access and preventing unintended pregnancies. We co-authored House Bill 242, which will encourage the donation and distribution of feminine hygiene products to individuals in need.

Healthcare Access
More than 18% of Texans live without health insurance, almost twice the national average. Our offi ce is proud to support measures that would make healthcare more accessible for all Texans such as accepting federal Medicaid expansion funds. Accepting these funds would bring in almost $5 billion annually and provide additional healthcare coverage for millions of Texans.

Our offi ce also fi led House Bill 1937, which would have decriminalized cannabis in Texas and allowed local governments to legalize the retail sale of cannabis. A new tax would be imposed on these cannabis sales to help fund our public schools and decrease our reliance on property taxes in Texas. Our offi ce will continue to support measures in the Texas House to decriminalize cannabis, expand the availability of medicinal cannabis, and move toward legalization.

Healthcare

Last session, Republicans passed a private school coupon scheme that take money out of your pocket in order to pay for private schooling for Texas’ richest families. I proudly voted to increase funding for our public schools, voted in support of pay raises for school employees, and voted against the Abbott voucher scheme

There is still more work to be done to increase resources for schools so all our children have the support they need in their education, and to ensure our teachers are compensated fairly for their service. Our office will continue supporting measures to improve our schools with additional funding for students, educators, and support staff.

Additionally, I vow to fi ght against vouchers in any Special Session called on school fi nance. Every child in Texas deserves access to quality education at our local public schools.

Protecting Your Right to Vote
During the 2020 Presidential Election, Texas was ranked the hardest state to cast a ballot in the United States. As Vice Chair of the House Elections Committee, I introduced many bills to expand access to voting for all Texans.

Our office plans to continue working on bills to protect the right to vote for disabled Texans, expand access to online voter registration, and simplify voting procedures to decrease confusion at the polls.

After the passage of Senate Bill 1 in the 2nd Special Session, vote-by-mail rejections have skyrocketed from around 2% to 20%, causing disenfranchisement for thousands of Texans. Our office will make it a priority to fix the identification issues caused by this bill to ensure all Texans’ votes are counted if they are eligible to vote-by-mail.

She previously served as a congressional fellow, a legislative assistant for a Democratic U.S. representative, and a White House intern. She also served as the Nevada voter protection director on President Obama s re-election campaign in 2012.
