Carl currently serves as a state representative for Somerset County. He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2008 and reelected for eight consecutive terms.

During his tenure, Metzgar has been a tireless advocate for the citizens of the 69th Legislative District, championing legislation to reduce government control, lower taxes, and promote a strong economy. He has also focused on public safety, supporting measures to enhance penalties for assaults against corrections staff and backing law enforcement initiatives.

“This budget agreement also requires state regulators to speed up the permitting process, enhancing Pennsylvania’s economic growth opportunities and increasing competitiveness while holding bureaucrats accountable. I have heard numerous horror stories about permitting and how the Commonwealth missed out on valuable chances because of it. We want to attract more investment here because everyone benefits.”

"As today’s workforce needs continue to grow, it is imperative to put young people in the best possible position to succeed," said Metzgar. "Career and technical centers play a significant role in identifying and developing talent, which in turn helps businesses for years to come. I am grateful to see this investment made into Somerset County."

Education

“Today, I voted in favor of the budget because there are significant wins that will benefit Somerset County residents in the long term.

The biggest victory is that Pennsylvania will be removed from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) – a carbon tax program that drives up electric bills and limits energy production. There will be no state-level replacement.”

HARRISBURG – To reign in the overreach of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) announced his intention to introduce legislation that would eliminate the entity’s ability to exercise the power of eminent domain – citing growing concerns over reckless expansion plans that threaten private property rights and Pennsylvania’s natural heritage.

Public Safety

HARRISBURG – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) announced today he is preparing to introduce legislation that would give Pennsylvania hunters and trappers more say in decisions impacting hunting seasons and traditions in the Commonwealth.

Metzgar’s proposal would require the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) to conduct a brief, optional survey when residents purchase their annual hunting or trapping license.

“Pennsylvania’s hunters and trappers deserve a meaningful voice in this process because they are directly impacted by the Game Commission’s decisions,” said Metzgar. “My intent is to create a direct, data-driven pathway for participants to disclose their preferences in a meaningful way.”
