Campbell began his service with the Iredell County Sheriff Office working his way from the Detention Center as a jailer, then moved up the ranks as patrol deputy, K-9 handler, ACE team and ICE team member, shift supervisor, Sheriff's Emergency Response Team Commander, Narcotics unit, and major over the Investigations Unit.

Darren Campbell took the oath of office as Iredell County’s Sheriff in 2014. As sheriff, he is responsible for ensuring his officers patrol the counties and enforce the law, maintain and operate jails, properly serve civil process papers, essential to all legal actions, and provide security for North Carolina courtrooms.

In 2014, Darren Campbell took the oath of office as Iredell County’s Sheriff. This was a victory following a continuous 20-year commitment to the Sheriff’s Office. Taking on the role of the Sheriff was one of great honor and Darren Campbell promised to the citizens that he would take a proactive stance against drugs, make a positive presence in the community, and be an accessible Sheriff.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Athletic League provides the youth of Iredell with competitive activities that will help them grow as a member of the community. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office also offers a 4-week Teen Academy annually, this program is designed by Sheriff Campbell to engage teenagers and help them learn how to handle issues they may encounter. In 2023, our Sheriff’s Office was the first agency in North Carolina to implement the peer-to-peer Cyber SWAT program in high schools.

Jail Management

With all of the money seized from Drug Dealers, we have been able to purchase tools to continue keeping our citizens safe without using tax money. The Bearcat, a Shallow-Water Rescue Vessel, two SAFE Boats, a Mobile Command Bus, and advanced Drones, to name a few. Utilizing these resources has lent a hand in decreasing the overall crime rate in Iredell County by 55% from 2014 to 2022.
