Mike is the sheriff of Avery County. He previously worked as a patrol sergeant for the Banner Elk Police Department from 2017 to 2020. Before that, he served as a trooper for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol from 1994 to 2017, retiring as a sergeant. Earlier in his career, he worked for the Asheville Police Department from 1988 to 1994.
