Moved to return proposed data-center development rules to the planning board and asked that the Unified Development Ordinance require downward-directed lighting to reduce nighttime glare.

A motion to approve text amendments to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) to allow data centers failed for a lack of a second at Monday night’s meeting of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners, but a motion by District 4’s George Thorne to send the proposed changes back to the planning board to address lighting concerns was unanimously approved.

Now, based on Thorne’s motion, Planning Director Dervin Spell will return to the planning board to allow them to delve into the document to ascertain how lighting is handled.

Thorne asked that if the language is not already in the UDO, that it be amended to direct lighting to be downward in nature so as to reduce the nighttime glare.

Housing & Urban Development

Commissioner George Thorne questioned the technology used at Nash being different from
Edgecombe and if we have figured out how to align the technology differences. Dr. Bryan
replied that our technology director is working on how to align the transition. Mr. Thorne asked
if we know the cost to change the technology. Dr. Bryan replied that we do not know the cost at
this time. Mr. Thorne asked if we have settled if the technology equipment in the merger schools
will be left. Dr. Bryan replied that back in November/December it was determined by NCDPI
that the equipment property will follow to Edgecombe.
Commissioner George Thorne stated he would love for the SRO Program to expand to hiring
full-time SROs and not part-time. Dr. Bryan stated that we have a lot of support from the Nash
and Edgecombe Sheriff Offices. School Security is important to everyone.
