I grew up as a first-generation college graduate, earning a B.A., B.S., and Master’s of Science from The University of Wisconsin- Madison. Public Education has always been important in my life. Added up, the time I’ve spent consecutively with each of our children in Public Schools totals 43 years.

Michelle lives her life for Christ and has been married for 22 years. She is a busy mother of eight, has a local family business, and is a lifelong Republican. A Johnston County resident, her eldest child graduated from Corinth Holders in 2018. Michelle was licensed to teach school in California and Wisconsin, understands the world of education, and has been an advocate in the North Carolina education realm driving out bad policy to return our schools to excellence.

Mom’s On a Mission for Service M.O.M.S., School volunteer and supply donations. White Oak Baptist Church Archer Lodge- helped develop and write Church Policy for care and operation of programs for children. Volunteer Sunday School program. Husband serves as a Deacon.

The Johnston County Report -2020 to current Writing in-depth education op-eds and news pieces. First to write an Expose on Panorama Education in May 2020 detailing the data collecting, social scoring surveys now tied to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Access to Education

A vision that understands gaps in talents across all spectrums will always exist, it’s not about closing those gaps, rather working inside them to ensure all students leave public schools with a meaningful tomorrow. Grow student’s strengths by allowing teachers to be the expert and leader in the classroom. Hire and retain the best educators and give them administrators that support rather than hinder their success.

Teachers

While I have actively worked against using the cover of equity to bring critical race theory and ‘antiracist’ divisive policy into our schools, just eliminating those principles won’t restore our school’s success alone. Restoring the Flame for learning requires a plan. I have four key ideas to get our schools out of the depths of dysfunction and failure.

Authority of the parent/guardian will be recognized. I promise to advocate for policy that would make The Johnston County Schools openly inform parents on the general education resources and tools used in the classroom. No more soft programs meant to inculcate moral values. Parents are best suited and in charge of children’s foundational beliefs.

Achieve proficiency for all regular education students. The most basic foundations of reading, writing, and arithmetic will be restored. We must have a minimal standard of achievement, because life requires a basic ability in these areas to function successfully. Making the minimum a non-negotiable means the larger academic ladder will always remain open, even if out of high school a student should chose a vocational, artistic, or even athletic use of their talents.

The Big Sky Literacy Summit was held this August 21-23 in Big Sky, Montana. A huge wealth of literary programming and research was shared, major focus on the need to return to more substantial writing in early grades. A large push for identifying early the signs of dyslexia for remedial help and proper intervention, rather than retention. The most important piece is the continued development of the Science of Reading. In the end literacy is the privilege that will equalize the playing field for all students.

I have agreed with Mrs. Truitt on her literacy programming and her cleaning up of the DPI. I have never agreed with her push for Portrait of a Graduate into all of NC. Her desire to make all of NC schools Competency Based Education models, after the Marzano Model, (Aurora Institute) which was tried as Joco2020 and failed horribly - it is bad policy.

Administrators will no longer pass the buck when failing to meet IEPs, promoting woke trainings, enforcing deficient discipline by using restorative justice practices.

No more soft programs meant to inculcate moral values. Parents are best suited and in charge of children’s foundational beliefs. Using the large network of administrative staff to engage resources for children who need additional services will always be done with the support and consent of parents. Making medical decisions is a parental right, and you can count on my vote to make masks and vaccines a choice inside our schools.

Everytown /Moms Demand is a fund for progressive candidates and issues. I respect their right to organize and have their political positions. I do not support their request at the last board of education meeting, and in follow-up emails, to have their organizations information provided to each student, or to partner with the schools.
