Madon: Clerks of court in North Carolina are judges and preside over matters pertaining to probate filings, estate disputes, foreclosures, real estate partitions, incompetency/guardianship proceedings and adoptions. The clerk also manages courthouse personnel that process, index and maintain court records. I am the only candidate that is an attorney and the only candidate with administrative experience in our courthouse. In private practice I represented hundreds of our citizens in every matter heard before the clerk. I have wonderful working relationships with our leaders and have the support and endorsement of Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram and District Attorney Jon David.

Legal Experience

Madon: Brunswick County is the fastest growing county in the state. Most of that growth is from individuals at or above the age of retirement, creating an increase in matters heard before the clerk. We are still trying to work through the COVID backlog. I‘m committed to working with our judges to create more court sessions. Clerks will be cross trained and thereby improve efficiency by allowing court sessions to have larger dockets or allow multiple court sessions to run at the same time. As an attorney, I will preside over clerk hearings rather than delegating that responsibility.

Madon: The clerk has an obligation to create a general understanding of what business takes place at our courthouse. A lot of citizens with matters heard before the clerk act as their own attorney. While we can’t give legal advice, I plan to create outlines of the procedure for our most common matters heard before the clerk: estate filings and incompetency/guardianships. I will also improve the courthouse website to include information about courthouse procedure and create the ability for appointments to be made online. Court services are often sought during difficult times and the clerk must create an environment that is welcoming, patient and courteous.
