He and his wife, Gwendolyn, have five children. Al is the pastor of Infinity Mennonite Church in Harlem.

Al previously worked as chief of staff to former Assemblyman Herman "Denny" Farrell, Jr. He also served in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps while earning his GED. Al founded the Man Up! in Harlem program in 2008 to combat gun violence in his neighborhood.
