Karina lived as a child in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic; Carolina, Puerto Rico; and Corona, Queens. She has served her hospital's bargaining unit of the New York State Nursing Association and has volunteered after disasters in Haiti and Puerto Rico, and at community health fairs in the Bronx.

Karines is an oncology nurse at Montefiore Einstein Hospital. She previously managed health information at Mount Sinai Hospital while working a second job for Aramark.
