John graduated from North Duplin High School and continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. John Bell is married to Kelli, and together they have a daughter.

John began his professional career with the Boy Scouts of America in Goldsboro with the Tuscarora Council, covering Duplin and Sampson counties. Bell also has experience in banking, having managed a bank in Goldsboro and worked with the NC Community Credit Union. Additionally, he is a board member for RISE Capital, a private equity company with companies based throughout North Carolina.
