Len graduated from Southern Wayne High School, then earned his bachelor's degree in Spanish from North Carolina Central University and his master's degree in health service administration from Central Michigan University. He is married to his wife, Renee, with whom he has 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren.

Len is currently retired. Prior, he worked for the State of North Carolina for 30 years.
