Alvin is originally from Lansing, Michigan, but now lives in Augusta. He is a retired 20-year veteran of the US Army. Alvin also owned a barbecue restaurant in Augusta.

Alvin Mason is currently serving as the Commissioner for Richmond County District 4. He was first elected to the role in 2007. He was reappointed in 2021. He ran for Mayor of Augusta in 2014 and did not win.
