- The duties of the mayor depend on the type of government within the city, 
- If the city has a mayor-council form of government, the mayor is responsible for the executive and administrative functions of the government. They oversee all city departments, but cannot vote in most council matters. 
- If the city has a mayor-aldermen form of government, the mayor is responsible for executing and enforcing local and state laws. The mayor may appoint city officials with approval from the aldermen. 
- If the city has a mayor-commission form of government, the mayor presides over the city commissioners and can vote within the commission. The mayor is responsible for executing all decisions reached by the commission. 
- If the city has a city manager form of government, the mayor presides over the city commissioners and can vote within the commission. The mayor is recognized as the head of the city department but does not have any regular administrative duties. 
- City mayors are elected during general elections for a four-year term. Most cities in Kentucky hold nonpartisan elections for mayor.

- Board of education members work as a team to lead the school district by setting policy, providing resources, and overseeing employees. 
- The board of education is responsible for the local school budget. It reviews expenditures, allocates funds, and approves facility plans. The board may levy taxes if deemed necessary.
- The board of education hires and directly supervises the district superintendent.
- School board of education numbers are elected in staggered even-numbered years through a nonpartisan election and serve four-year terms. Most boards in Kentucky consist of five members. 
- Independent school districts elect board members at large; county school districts elect board members from divisions. 
- School board members do not receive a salary. They may be compensated for costs associated with state-mandated activities.

- The constable delivers official legal documents, like a court summons or subpoenas and may serve warrants where allowed.
- Due to a 2022 law change, someone elected to this office does not automatically have law enforcement powers if the person did not have those powers before. To have law enforcement powers, a constable must be certified by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council or grandfathered in, having served as a constable before 2023. 
- The constable is allowed to carry a concealed weapon and ay seize personal property to collect on fees owed to them.
- They are elected to a 4-year term.
- In all counties except Jefferson and Fayette, constables are compensated from the fees they collect. In Jefferson and Fayette, they are paid a $9,600 per year salary.

- The county clerk manages voter registration and removals, oversees the county board of elections, and resolves election day questions on voter registration, ID proofs, and absentee ballot signatures.
- The county clerk maintains ballots, voting equipment, and drop-boxes for absentee ballots.

- This position has a maximum salary based on county size. The current maximum annual salary ranges from approximately $85,000 to $154,400.

- The county attorney serves as the legal advisor and representative for the county government. Their role includes providing legal advice, conducting county business, ensuring proper financial transactions, and preventing payment of illegal or unjust bills.
- The county attorney prosecutes criminal and penal law violations in the district court. They work closely with the commonwealth’s attorney, who is responsible for prosecuting cases in the circuit court. 
- County attorneys are paid about $184,000 a year and can continue to work in private practice at the same time.
- To be eligible, must be a licensed practicing attorney for 2 years before election.

- The coroner investigates certain types of deaths and attempts to determine their cause. To determine the cause of death, the coroner can order an autopsy, seize evidence, and interrogate people.
- The coroner can present evidence to a coroner’s jury. If that jury returns a verdict of manslaughter, murder, or other criminal act, then the coroner must make an arrest or notify law enforcement.
- The coroner has discretion about investigating deaths from natural causes.
- The minimum possible salary is determined based on county population and a coroner’s continuing education. The minimum monthly pay ranges from $200 to $1,300. The current maximum annual salary allowed is about $93,000.
- A coroner must possess a current certificate of continuing education in order to perform a postmortem examination but otherwise has no educational requirements for the job.
