In October 2020, while running as a candidate for Carrollton Mayor, Zul was arrested and charged with 109 felony counts related to mail ballot fraud, including 84 counts of fraudulent use of a mail ballot application and 25 counts of unlawful possession of official mail ballots belonging to Carrollton residents.

In December 2024, Zul pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison and 10 years of probation on the ballot fraud charges.
