Bohl: I was inspired by the mayor and encouraged by her actions to run for this office. As mayor, I would facilitate the orderly and timely conduct of City Council meetings to address the needs and concerns of the public, to be decisive in conducting city business and to affect action where there has been stagnation and complacency.
Additionally, as mayor, I will have more channels of opportunity to speak with peers and share concerns, issues and solutions to bring about the most effective outcome to best benefit the citizens of Leon Valley. Finally, the value that the mayor's position holds is the most appropriate choice to utilize the passions and insights of the community in service to all, not just in service to those who vote for me.
After 18 years, our community still seeks leadership, confidence and a display of knowledge that has not been delivered on.

Bohl: First and foremost, making the city safer and assuring quality of life by advocating for the passage of a change to Chapter 2 of the Code of Ordinances that eliminates puppy mill animals as a source for animal retail stores in Leon Valley.
Formation of a functional animal care program in Leon Valley to assist in addressing and enforcing all animal matters in Leon Valley. These two measures would have an immediate positive impact on the safety of the residents.
I would focus next on collaborating with our county and state level representative counterparts to receive various funding sources for public safety improvements, infrastructure improvements, and more comprehensive flood mitigation actions. And most importantly, leading the council to be more professional and decisive in its role in making policy that benefits Leon Valley as a whole.

Evan Bohl, a Leon Valley mayoral candidate, said one of the issues he gets asked about is flooding. He said he favored the city's moving forward with a plan split between options two and three, suggesting an 85-foot width around the park and increasing the channel to a 100- to 120-foot width toward where the natural area is closer to Bandera Road. "I have confidence most of the community" could get on board with "removing just a portion of the park ... to solve or greatly mitigate" flooding, Bohl said. "You are taking homes out of the floodplain; everyone would be thankful for that."

First elected mayor in 2004, Riley said she loves the job. While residents asked her to run for reelection, she left the door open for others to run against her.

Two challengers took the opportunity, but neither drew much traction. Evan Bohl, a member of the council’s Capital Facilities Oversight Committee who ran for mayor in the two previous elections and took 16% of the vote, and Jed Hefner, a former councilman who criticized the city’s new homeless camping ban as too harsh, and took 10%.

Hefner read off a list of some of the most commonly banned books — classics such as George Orwell’s “1984” and Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird — books that were “formative” to his education.

“Whether you agree or not with the content of a book, it is wholly un-American to ban books,” Hefner said. “If you choose not to read a book, that’s your right.”

Now the cameras are unpopular among residents, Hefner said.

“Our citizens don’t want them,” Hefner said. “Getting rid of them is the right thing to do for our city.”
