Public Services

Do you support developing and building out the city, particularly on the west side, or would you like to see the city retain undeveloped land?

There is 40% of League City that is not developed and mainly the west side area. If developed there would be needs for roads, drainage, ponds, water, sewer and flood planning. I support suburban mixed-use development for attracting employers, more walkable land, lower density suburban development and trails.

Addressing potential zoning conflicts could be the key to navigating growing pains as the city expands, Welty said.
“Poor zoning decisions can lead to unhappy neighbors or underperforming businesses,” Welty said. Rapid development can threaten the environment with loss of green space, drainage and flood resilience, especially in a region that already deals with flooding concerns, Welty said. “We have opportunities for smart mixed-use development by carefully planned areas that blend homes, shops, restaurants, and green spaces can boost quality of life and create walkable communities that attract both residents and businesses.”

Mayor Nick Long filed for re-election on July 20. Council member Tom Crews filed Aug. 4 to challenge Long, a move that under the city charter constituted an automatic resignation from his Position 3 seat. A separate special election filing window for Position 3 closes at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.

In Position 6, banker Sean Doyle filed July 20 to challenge incumbent Chad Tressler. Incumbent Sean Saunders, a captain and paramedic, filed the same day to seek re-election to Position 7.
