Chris is from Richlands, North Carolina. He attended the Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy at Coastal Carolina Community College. He has an associate degree in criminal justice and a bachelor's degree in business management and organization from Mount Olive College. He lives with his wife, Katie, in Richlands.

Chris is the Sheriff of Onslow County. He works at the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, where he has been since 2014. He previously worked as a soldier in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1986; as a deputy sheriff in the Pender County jail, rising to Captain and Chief Deputy over 16 years; as a deputy sheriff and operations deputy at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for nearly two years; as a special agent focusing on drug enforcement at the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, where he retired as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Coastal District; and as a Special Operations detective conducting drug investigations at the Jacksonville Police Department.
